A pair of surprises -- $2,500 worth -- enlivened the DeKalb County Cadet Squadron’s award ceremony Thursday night.

Jay Bess of the Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force presented the squadron’s cadet activities officer, Capt. Raymond Johnson, with a check for $1,500 for members’ assistance Sept. 24-25 at  the annual Warbirds Weekend at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. As in previous years, cadets were responsible for overseeing parking, welcoming and directing visitors and handling crowd control.

In addition, Capt. Dan Cook, the unit’s deputy commander, announced that the VMware Foundation has donated $1,000 to the squadron for its exceptional service throughout the year in the community.
